Grant a big boost to elementary school

The Forest Grove School District learned last week that Echo Shaw Elementary School was awarded a $5,000 Laura Bush Foundation Book Grant.

Mr. Brian Boyd, instructional assistant, helped manage the school library and wrote the grant proposal in December 2012. Mr. Boyd surveyed teachers to determine what fiction and non-fiction books would best coincide with their teaching. New books and other resources are expected to be available in the fall of 2013.

The main reason Mr. Boyd applied for the grant was to develop the Spanish non-fiction section, which was small considering Echo Shaw is a bilingual school. The new books acquired will help teachers and students teach and learn in both English and Spanish with in-house resources, and we are all very pleased the grant request proved successful.

Mr. Boyd is currently pursuing a masters of business administration degree at George Fox University.

As a school board member and library advocate, I wish to express my appreciation and thanks on behalf of students, teachers and the community for Mr. Boyd’s initiative and successful grant research and application efforts.
