Local writer launches book

Roger Ritchey has published a collection of humorous short stories about growing up during the ’40s and ’50s on the family farm in Forest Grove. Containing historic photos and local history, his book is titled “Hankering For The Way It Was: Mostly True Short Stories.” Help celebrate the book release at Montinore Vineyards, 3663 S.W. Dilley Road, Forest Grove, on Saturday, Nov. 16, from 5 to 7 p.m. Copies of his book will be available.

Laika explains animation

Animation lovers from sixth grade through high school are invited Tuesday, Nov. 19, to a presentation by Mark Shapiro of LAIKA, the company that created the movies “ParaNorman” and “Coraline.” He will show behind-the-scenes imagery and time-lapse footage, as well as present puppets and armatures. The free event begins at 3 p.m. at the Jessie Mays Community Center, 30975 N.W. Hillcrest St., North Plains.

Tom Sawyer musical is this week

Journey Theater Arts Group will present the Broadway musical adaptation of “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” for young audiences at the Venetian Theatre in Hillsboro this week. Set in 1840, it’s the classic story of a 14-year-old boy growing up in the heartland of America. Performances are offered Thursday, Nov. 14 through Sunday, Nov. 17.
