Boxers stay unbeaten with a 31-21 victory against Whitworth

Pacific continued its historic start to the 2013 football season, coming from behind to beat Whitworth 31-21 on Saturday and give the Boxers their first 4-0 start since Harry Truman was President.

The victory was the Boxers’ first over Whitworth since 1978, and it solidified the program’s best start since the 1950 season, when Pacific opened with wins against Western Washington, Western Oregon, Chico State and the College of Idaho.

Pacific trailed 14-0 in the first half, but stormed back with 24 unanswered points to clip the Pirates in both teams’ Northwest Conference opener.

Jordan Fukumoto caught a 27-yard touchdown pass from P.J. Minaya to make it 14-7 with a little more than a minute left before halftime, and the Boxers surged out of the gate in the second half, scoring on a 22-yard pass from Minaya to Caleb Roher, followed less than two minutes later by an 11-yard touchdown run from Deven McKinney.

Moses Villareal-Gomez booted a 26-yard field goal late in the third quarter to give Pacific a 24-14 lead, and Bobby Ladiges provided some insurance with a 1-yard touchdown run with 11:50 left in the game.

From there, it was on the Pacific defense to keep Whitworth (2-3, 0-1 NWC) out of the end zone, and the Boxers were up to the challenge.

Josh Brinkworth led another strong defensive day for the Boxers with nine tackles and a forced fumble, while Chris Santiago had seven tackles, a tackle for loss and a forced fumble.

Minaya and T.C. Campbell continued to successfully split quarterbacking duties, with Minaya completing 10-of-15 pass attempts for 174 yards and two touchdowns, while Campbell went 6-of-10 for 105 yards.

Gunther Schultze led Pacific rushers with 56 yards on seven carries and Jakob Lawrence caught four passes for 80 yards.

Pacific will look to go to 5-0 for the first time in school history this weekend when the Boxers host Puget Sound (1-2, 0-1) for homecoming. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Saturday at Lincoln Park Stadium.
