Greyhounds punch their ticket for the state tournament with a win against Portland Christian
by: Chase Allgood Gaston’s Cassie Van Dyke gets fouled on her way to the basket during last Thursday’s game against Vernonia.

On the final day of the regular season, both Gaston basketball teams played themselves into position to earn a berth to the Class 2A state playoffs, but by the end of the day Saturday, it was the Gaston boys who were going dancing while the girls had to stay behind.

After losing to Vernonia on Thursday in the first round of the Northwest League playoffs, Gaston bounced back with a 50-41 victory over Portland Christian on Saturday that clinched the league's No. 3 seed for the upcoming state playoffs, which begin with first-round games this Saturday.

Gaston (15-8) will travel to face Days Creek (22-4), the regular season Mountain View Conference champions. The winner of that game advances to the 2A state tournament, which begins March 1 at the Pendleton Convention Center.

The Gaston girls played themselves into state playoff contention with a 39-34 win over Vernonia on Thursday, but the Lady Hounds dropped a 59-49 decision to Knappa on Saturday in the league's third-place game.

That left Gaston (15-9) on the outside looking in, while league mates Portland Christian, Riverdale and Knappa head off to the state playoffs. On the boys side, Vernonia upset Faith Bible on Saturday to earn the league's No. 1 seed for the state playoffs.
