East County mothers will nurse babies together at Friday event in Gresham

An event promoting comfort around breast-feeding in public is about to return to the Portland area for the fourth year.

The Big Latch On will take place Friday, Aug. 2, at Park Place Coffee Shop, 1288 S.E. 182nd Ave., Gresham, as a part of World Breastfeeding Week.

Sign-ups begin at 10 a.m. Friday, with the event starting at 10:30 a.m. Volunteers will count the number of mothers and nursing babies who are simultaneously breast-feeding for one minute.

“We hope to make breast-feeding a positive, normal part of the day-to-day life of mothers and babies in public places in the community,” said Kari James, special projects coordinator for SnowCap Community Charities, a sponsor of the event.

Created in 1990 by the World Health Organization and UNICEF, World Breastfeeding Week is intended to protect, promote and support breast-feeding. The week is celebrated every year in more than 170 countries.

The Big Latch On was first organized in New Zealand in 2005 and came to Portland in 2010. Berkeley, Calif., holds the record for the Big Latch On, with more than 1,100 mothers breastfeeding simultaneously.

“It’s a really good way for mothers to spend time with other women and families, have some fun and enjoy coffee and conversation,” James said.

Along with sponsoring the Big Latch On, SnowCap previously has sponsored breast-feeding classes for new mothers and mothers-to-be.
