East Country school districts selected as grant recipients

Gresham-Barlow and Centennial school districts each won federal 21st Century Community Learning Center grants to fund after-school and summer school programs.

Gresham-Barlow won $2 million and Centennial $1.5 million, which will amplify offerings in science, reading and English as a second language classes. They were among the 22 school districts or other organizations that were selected as recipients by the Oregon Department of Education.

Gresham-Barlow school district will use the funds over a five-year time span to expand their after-school program to three middle schools: Clear Breek, Dexter McCarty and Gordon Russell. Activities will most likely include recreational offerings such as arts and crafts and pick-up basketball, and academic offerings such as customized reading instruction, native literacy lessons and math and science projects.

The Century Community Learning Center grants have been offered since 2002 and are designed to extend learning outside classroom hours for students who may need extra help.
