Get informed about potential bond

Gresham-Barlow School District will hold two informational meetings on the school bond measure up for vote on Nov. 5.

The meetings will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 18, at Sam Barlow High School and 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 24, at Gresham High School, providing the same information and meeting format.

Voters in the Gresham-Barlow School District will vote this fall on whether to approve a proposed school bond of $210 million intended to renovate schools, upgrade technology, improve security and add classroom space.

If approved, property tax rates for the school district’s bond debt would increase by $1.56 per $1,000 assessed value. Property taxes would increase by about $22 a month for a home with a median assessed value of $167,350. As the community grows, payments would be spread among new residents.

Childcare and Spanish and Russian interpretation will be available. To register or learn more, visit or call Joy Helfrich at 503-261-4558.

Help kids with reading

The Gresham-Barlow School District’s Oasis Volunteer Program is looking for parents, grandparents, neighbors and friends to work with children who are struggling to learn to read.

Oasis volunteers spend one hour a week during the school day working one-on-one with a child in grades first through fifth to build reading and language skills, self-esteem and positive attitudes toward learning.

Oasis provides training, materials and ongoing support. The training will take place in two three-hour sessions for a total of six hours: 9 a.m. to noon Wednesday, Sept. 25 and 9 a.m. to noon Friday, Sept. 27.

Tutors are encouraged to attend a monthly support meeting to share experiences with other tutors and receive additional training and materials.

No teaching experience is required. For more information, call Marilyn at 503-665-3544 or email her at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
