Road improvements bring nightime and weekend delays and closures

A project has begun to improve the Interstate 84 interchange at Exit 17 and Northwest Marine Drive, according to officials at the Oregon Department of Transportation.

Construction also will take place at night and on weekends, with minimal daytime traffic impacts and no daytime lane closures.

Motorists can expect periodic on- and off-ramp closures in both directions at Exit 17 on Marine Drive and Southwest 257th/Graham Road.

There will be occasional weekend full closures of Marine Drive between North and South Frontage Roads, and motorists will be detoured to Northeast 238th Drive and Southwest Halsey Street.

Drivers also can expect intermittent single lane closures on both I-84 eastbound and westbound, and periodic nighttime full closures in each direction.

A public open house will be held from 4:30-6:30 p.m Monday, March 17, at the Holiday Inn Express in Troutdale for those who want to learn more about the project and traffic impacts. It will be held in the conference room at the hotel at 477 N.W. Phoenix Drive, behind Shari’s Restauraunt.

The state transportation department is making operation and safety improvements with the expectation that traffic will increase in the area that is already used heavily by Troutdale residents, visitors and commercial workers.

Plans are to widen Marine Drive between North and South Frontage Roads to allow two-way traffic. Cars will be able to exit I-84 to turn directly on to northbound Marine Drive without having to drive around. The project also will replace the existing I-84 overpass bridges at Marine Drive with a new bridge and improve the two Marine Drive intersections at the Frontage Roads.

Bike lanes and a new sidewalk will be added on Marine Drive under the interstate overpass.
