The public is invited to hear about new improvements to pedestrian safety at 11 a.m. press conference Tuesday, April 22 at Ventura Park, Southeast 113th Avenue and Southeast Stark Street.

Reps. Shemia Fagan and Jessica Vega Pederson with join community members and city transportation officials to announce “new pedestrian safety investments.”

Exactly what those investments are will be spelled out at the press conference, but came about because of a “string of horrific pedestrian fatalities,” according to a press release from the lawmakers.

Millions of dollars have already been spent to build sidewalks along Southeast 136th Avenue, but more is needed, the release says.

“However, after decades of neglect, East Portland continues to lack basic pedestrian safety including sidewalks, crosswalks and adequate lighting,” the press release states. “More needs to be done and tomorrow Reps. Fagan and Vega Pederson will announce another important step.”
