Injuries from steep fall in Hogsback climbing area proves fatal

POST PHOTO: BRITTANY ALLEN - A photo of Mount Hood taken in December. John Thorton Jenkins, a 32-year-old man from Seattle, died on Mount Hood on Sunday, May 7.

The Clackamas County Sheriff's Office said he was climbing near the Hogsback area and sustained serious injuries when he apparently slipped or fell, sliding about 600 feet.

The sheriff's office Search and Rescue team, accompanied by Mt. Hood Ski Patrol and Portland Mountain Rescue, responded to the call about the incident and administered medical treatment at the site.

The man was then airlifted by the Oregon Air National Guard to a hospital in the Portland area, where he later was pronounced dead.

Family members have been notified, and the sheriff's office released Jenkins' name on Monday, May 8.
