FILE PHOTO - A Multnomah County Sheriff's Deputy smiles at work. The Multnomah County Sheriff's Office will engage in enhanced driving while under the influence of intoxicants enforcement during Labor Day weekend to ensure the safety of everyone out enjoying the sun.

Because of the holiday weekend, Sept. 2-4, deputies are reminding drivers to remain sober. In 2015 across the country 35,092 people died in traffic crashes. Of those 10,265 were killed in drunk-driving crashes — equating to almost a third of the fatalities.

Funding for the patrols is provided by the Oregon State Sheriff's Association and the Oregon Department of Transportation.

The department says if you plan on drinking during the weekend, either designate a sober driver, call a taxi or use public transportation.
