Alder Elementary, the second-highest poverty school in Oregon, unveiled a custom painting of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at a school-wide ceremony Wednesday, March 19.

More than 500 K-5 students gathered with donors and community partners from Urban League Young Professionals to unveil the painting.

Jessica Stanton, owner of Stanton Global Communications, and her husband, Michael Stanton, executive chef at the Heathman Hotel, donated the custom painting by Los Angeles-based artist Patrick McCarthy.

“This portrait of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. inspired us as we pursued our dreams in spite of adversity. In its new home in Alder Elementary, we hope that this portrait inspires all who see it to consider how Dr. King’s dream and vision may inspire their own,” Jessica and Michael Stanton said.

Alder Elementary is the nation’s first “dreamer school” through “I Have a Dream” Foundation Oregon. The goal is for 100 percent of dreamer students to graduate high school and 80 percent complete post-secondary education.
