GIRLS BASKETBALL - Corbett starts fourth quarter with a lead before falling 47-38

The Corbett girls basketball team had its chances Thursday night, but couldn't finish off a pesky Portland Adventist team during a 47-38 loss in Lewis and Clark League action.

Corbett's defense smothered the #6-ranked Cougars early in the game and hit halftime with a 20-12 lead. But that margin was short-lived, as Portland Adventist stormed out of the locker room and tied the game late in the third period on back-to-back 3s by Joni Hanson and Stacie Damazo.

The Cardinals answered the challenge when Simone Ballard grabbed an offensive rebound and beat the buzzer with a putback. She struck again to start the fourth quarter, knocking down a pass near midcourt and taking the steal the distance for a layin and a 34-30 Cardinals lead.

But that cushion went flat within a minute...
