The Timberwolves find the end zone twice to down Centennial 14-3

by: THE OUTLOOK: DAVID BALL - Centennials Aaron Colford works to bring down Tualatin running back Connor McCullough during Fridays 14-3 first-round loss. TUALATIN — Centennial came up empty on its scoring chances in the first half Friday night and paid dearly when Tualatin found its stride after the break to claim a 14-3 win over the Eagles in the opening round of the OSAA 6A football playoffs.

Centennial marched into the red zone on three of its four first-half drives, but couldn’t put any points on the scoreboard. The Eagles came up inches short on fourth down, suffered an interception and were victims of a goal-line stand.

“Different things kept happening and we weren’t able to finish those drives,” Centennial coach Chris Knudsen said. “We should have had a big lead at halftime, and that would have changed the whole complexion of the game.”

Instead, the teams went to the locker room scoreless.

Tualatin put up the winning points late in the third quarter when QB Brandon Shroyer found Nick Hines with a 17-yard pass to the back pylon.

Centennial threatened to tie the game when QB Bobby Craswell ran 13 yards through the middle to set up a 1st-and-goal from the 10-yard line. Instead, the 14-play drive ended with a Zach Leslie 30-yard field goal.

The Eagles had a chance to get the ball back when linebacker Justin Lee tripped up Shroyer for a 5-yard loss, eventually leaving Tualatin to face a 3rd-and-7 on its own end of the field. But Shroyer converted the first down by finding Hines on a sideline pass that turned into a 43-yard gain. Two plays later, Shroyer ran 5 yards through the middle to make it 14-3 with 4:38 to play.

Tualatin (7-3) advances to play No. 4 Sheldon (8-2) in the second round next Friday.
