The Blue Jays run away in the second half to down City Christian 38-23

by: THE OUTLOOK: DAVID BALL - Portland Lutheran center Kaitlin Howard passes out of a crowd during Thursdays playoff win over City Christian. The Portland Lutheran girls basketball team turned the tables on regular-season runner-up City Christian in the Valley 10 playoffs Thursday night.

After losing both regular-season meetings to the Lions by a combined 37 points, the Blue Jays locked down City for a lopsided 38-23 victory when it mattered most.

Portland Lutheran broke the game open in the third period with a relentless run at the basket. Ayde Alvarado got the scoring spree started with a coast-to-coast layin that saw her bump past a defender at the 3-point line to gain an open path to the rim.

After a pair of missed free throws on City’s end, the Blue Jays’ Danica Roady tracked down a long rebound and went unstopped down the sideline to scoop a shot off the backboard for another easy two.

Five minutes into the second half, a halftime deadlock had turned into a 10-point Blue Jays lead. City would get no closer than six points the rest of the way.

Portland Lutheran advances to face No. 2-ranked Damascus Christian in the Valley 10 title game at 6 p.m. Saturday.
