Danelle Woodcock gets wins in the 400 relay and long jump

by: THE OUTLOOK: DAVID BALL - Barlows Macie Allen gets rid of the baton to Renick Meyer in the first exchange of the 400-meter relay Saturday. The Bruins won in 47.74 seconds. EUGENE — The day started well for the Barlow girls track team at the 6A state meet at Hayward Field, but by the afternoon all the Bruins could do was watch and hope.

Barlow athletes were busy in the morning session with Danelle Woodcock picking up a second-place finish in the triple jump, while teammate Maddie Pernich added a handful of points by taking sixth in the shot put.

The Bruins highlighted their day in the 400-meter relay — the showcase event of the girls meet that kicked off Saturday’s racing finals. Barlow’s tag-team won the race hands down with Macie Allen breaking into the lead on the opening turn. Rookies Renick Meyer and Sara Turner stayed in front getting the baton to anchor Danelle Woodcock in a dead-heat with Hillsboro. Woodcock quickly separated and hit the finish line two strides in front.

Barlow won the race in 47.74 seconds without having a senior in the group.

“Sara ran the corner well, and I knew I was in good position when the baton came to me,” Woodcock said.

The win pushed Barlow to the top of the leader board with 33 points.

The Bruins would expand their lead two races later when Woodcock and Turner combined to put up eight points in the 100-meter final.

Barlow’s team score was frozen in place after the discus early in the afternoon, leaving the Bruins with a nine-point lead over Grant with five events remaining.

The Bruins stayed on top for about an hour before the Generals overtook them with Piper Donaghu’s win in the 800.

By the end of the day the Bruins would trickle down to a fourth-place finish, while fellow Mount Hood Conference member Central Catholic scored 54 points to beat Grant by one.

Due to an early Memorial Day deadline, full coverage of the state meet will appear in the Friday, May 30, print edition.
