PORTLAND — The Gresham all-stars scored twice in their first at bats and never trailed during a 4-3 win over LaGrande in an elimination game Thursday night at the state Little League tournament.

Keegan Hunt connected for an RBI-single and Hunter Snow brought in another run on a fielder’s choice for a 2-0 lead in the first inning. The Gophers extended the margin to 4-1 in the third inning when Hunt sent a two-run blast over the center-field fence.

LaGrande closed to within 4-3 in the fifth and had the go-ahead run at second base before Ethan Abrahamson struck out the last batter.

Abrahamson and Durham Sundberg combined to strike out the side in the sixth to finish off the win.

Gresham advances to the state finals series against Bend North at 5 p.m. Friday at Alpenrose Dairy. The Gophers need to win back-to-back games to claim the title.

“We’re going to give it all we’ve got,” Gresham manager Mike Abrahamson said. “Bend is a tough team, but if we can win that first game the pressure shifts to them and anything can happen.”
