The David Douglas volleyball team started fast, but couldn't finish off Hood River during a five-set loss to start the season Thursday night.

After surrendering the first point of the match, the Scots would force a side out and never trail again in the first set. Lydia Collins set the tone for the quick start with a block, followed by a kill when Hood River left a floater over the middle.

Libero Evelin Diaz followed with a four-point service run to put Douglas in charge 16-10.

Alyssa Ashe provided the finishing touch in the second set, diving to the floor twice in a row to keep a ball alive that Hood River would eventually send into the net. She would add a kill moments later to put the Scots up 23-19.

Hood River found its groove and would outscore the Scots 65-40 over the final three games to take the match.

David Douglas starts the Mount Hood Conference schedule at 6:15 p.m. tonight at Clackamas — last year's 6A runner-up.
