The Mt. Hood Community College volleyball team gave the West champs all they could handle before falling in five sets against Pierce College to open the Northwest championship tournament Thursday morning in Tacoma.

The Saints won the opening point of the fifth set when Kamalie Labanon hit a tip shot through the middle that caught the tape and trickled over to the other side.

Unfortunately for Mt. Hood that would prove to be its only lead in the final dash to 15.

The Raiders took charge 12-7 after Hannah Burkhart downed a floater over the middle, and Julia Heromema blasted a kill off a Mt. Hood block.

The Saints won four straight volleys coming out of a timeout, but couldn't quite pull even before Heronema finished it with a kill from the left side for the 25-10, 23-25, 19-25, 25-20, 15-12 match victory.

The Raiders were 13 of 19 (.684) on front-row attacks in the finale.

Mt. Hood falls into the elimination bracket and faces Edmonds in a best-of-3 match at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.
