The Gresham boys soccer team passed its first test against a top-10 opponent Thursday night when Leo Ruiz connected on a goal midway through the first half for a 1-0 win over No. 4 Wilson.

Ruiz chipped a ball over the top of the keeper in the game's 22nd minute, and the Gophers withstood a flurry of attacks down the stretch to secure the early-season win.

As the clock ticked under five minutes to play, Wilson's Desmond Wendt let loose with a low shot from 25 yards out. Gresham goalie Sergio Aguilar tracked the ball through a crowd to come up with the save.

Wilson made another challenge with 1:30 on the clock when Dylan Wehrli got in close to the post and attempted a crossing pass only to have Aguilar smother it coming off his foot.

"There was a lot of pressure not to let them score," Aguilar said. "I had to stop that ball before someone else tapped it in."

Gresham (4-0-1) plays at No. 7 McNary (3-1-2) at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 17.
