Update: Suspect was on post-prison supervision for assault

Hillsboro police shot a domestic violence suspect armed with a knife late Thursday.

"According to Hillboro Police spokesman Lt. Michael Rouches, The suspect assaulted his girlfriend, hitting her in the face. A male neighbor who heard the disturbance came to break it up, and that's when the suspect pulled out a folding knife and stabbed him in the leg. The officers were already on the way by then and arrived a short time later. They ordered the suspect to drop the knife and he refused. One of the officers used a Taser and it struck the suspect, but he did not drop and instead advanced towards the officers. They ordered him to drop the knife again and he refused, and then at least one of the officers shot him," Ruches says.

No officers were injured in the incident.

The supect underwent surgery and is expected to live.

The suspect's girlfriend was hospitalized with facial injuries.

A male neighbor was treated by a hospital for a single stab wound and released.

None of the names were immediately released. Rouches says the suspect was on post-prison supervision for Assault 2. He had previously lived in Multnomah County. Officers had not previously been called to the residence where the incident took place.

Rouches says that according to bureau policies, the officers are on paid administrative leave and the incident is being investigated by the Washington County Major Crime Team. Because at least one officer used deadly force, the results of the investigation will be present to the Washington County District Attorney, who will decide whether to present it to a grand jury.

The incident took place in an apartment complex at 2050 NE Barberry Drive.

Hillsboro police released the following statement early Friday:

On 11/08/12 at 1130 PM, Hillsboro police officers responded to a domestic violence call at 2050 NE Barberry Dr. where the suspect had beaten his girlfriend and stabbed a neighbor at the location.

Officers discovered that a mid 20's female had become involved in a domestic violence altercation with her live in boyfriend. The suspect in this case had physically assaulted her in their apartment. A male neighbor from a nearby apartment came to her aid and was stabbed by the male suspect with a folding knife.

Upon officers arrival, two Hillsboro officers confronted the 29 year old male suspect in his apartment. The suspect was holding a knife and was ordered to drop it by officers. The suspect refused and one officer deployed a taser, striking the suspect but was not effective in stopping him. The officers again ordered the suspect to drop the knife whereby the suspect refused and advanced at the officers with the knife in his hand.

A Hillsboro police officer fired two rounds from his duty weapon striking the suspect and stopping the threat. The officers were not physically injured in this altercation.

The suspect was taken into custody and transported to a local hospital via ambulance where he underwent surgery and he is expected to live.

The male stabbing victim was treated and released from a local hospital for a single stab wound. The female victim was also transported to a local hospital and is expected to recover from facial injuries sustained at the hands of the suspect.

This investigation continues by the Washington County Major Crimes Team.
