Chamber, medical providers team up to educate business owners

The Greater Hillsboro Chamber of Commerce and Tuality Healthcare, Kaiser Permanente Northwest and Providence Health Plans are teaming up to host a health insurance exchange conference designed for small business owners from 8 to 11:15 a.m. May 31 at the Tuality Health Education Center, 334 S.E. 8th Ave. in Hillsboro.

The free conference, “Navigating the Affordable Care Act: Focus on Small Business,” is intended to provide guidance for business owners as they navigate the new health insurance exchange marketplace that goes into effect Oct 1.

The event will feature experts from the health insurance industry, Cover Oregon (the new central marketplace where individuals and employers will be able to compare insurance plans and access government financial assistance information) and the Community Assistors group, which is charged with answering health insurance questions. It will feature a continental breakfast and time for questions and answers.

The Affordable Care Act, the federal health care reform act President Barack Obama signed into law in 2010.

“Negotiating the new health insurance exchange is a complex proposition,” said Deanna Palm, president of the chamber. “What we hope to accomplish with this summit is to give small business owners the tools they need to successfully navigate the plans that take effect in October.”
