Cadet Richard David Austring of Hillsboro graduated from the U.S. Military Academy on May 25.

While at West Point, Austring studied civil engineering. He was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army within the Engineer’s branch and will report to Fort Riley, Kan., for his first assignment.

He is the son of Rev. and Mrs. Bryan Austring of Hillsboro.

Lisa Aguilar named new Orenco principal

Lisa Aguilar, currently an English language development facilitator at Echo Shaw Elementary School in Forest Grove, will become principal of Orenco Elementary School, effective July 1.

Besides her position at Echo Shaw, Aguilar has also been actively involved in Forest Grove’s Summer Success Academy since 2008. In addition, she is an adjunct faculty member at Lewis and Clark College and a part-time faculty member at Concordia University.

She is a published author and frequent speaker on the topics of multi-lingual and multi-cultural education as well as culturally responsive teaching.

Aguilar replaces Tim Bishop, who was placed on administrative leave in April after an arrest for misdemeanor hit and run and harassment.

Current interim principal Mike Strande will complete the school year at Orenco.

Tuality foundation awards scholarships

The Tuality Healthcare Foundation recently awarded scholarships to two local high school students.

Liberty High School graduate Savannah Tran was the recipient of the Flo Rhea Health Careers Endowment Scholarship. She is the daughter of Phuong Lam and Duoc Tran of Hillsboro. She will attend the University of Oregon and major in human physiology.

Aloha High School graduate Tabitha Vielmett, is the recipient of the Dr. Marvin J. Robb Memorial Scholarship. She is the daughter of Ken and Shannon Vielmette of Beaverton.

She plans to attend Harding University and major in exercise science.
