Animal shelter offers $10 adoptions on adults cats through August

Looking for a furry companion? Every cat over a year old at the Bonnie Hays Small Animal Shelter in Hillsboro has a reduced adoption fee of $10 through Aug. 30.

Summer is “kitten season” at local animal shelters – the time of year when adorable youngsters take everyone’s attention.

Through the end of August, adult cats are adoptable for just $10. Think of it as a “former kitten sale.”

“We want to make sure that people are looking at grown-up cats, too,” said Deborah Wood, Animal Services Manager at the shelter in Hillsboro. “We think our ‘sale’ will get people thinking about the joys of older cats.”

Adult cats have their personalities – uh, purr-sonalities -- established, Wood said. “You’ll know whether you’re getting a love bug or an independent spirit.”

Kittens can be exhausting, she added. “You forget how often kittens decide to entertain themselves in the middle of the night, and how random their behavior can be,” said Wood. Kittens are infamous for shenanigans like climbing up pants legs and curtains.

In addition, adult cats are excellent self-cleaners, she said.

Best of all, an adopted adult cat will know that you rescued him.

“It’s not just dogs who love the people who adopt them. A grown-up cat that has lived through a lot of experiences will be so grateful for a terrific new life with you,” Wood said.

All cats are spayed/neutered before going up for adoption. They have been vaccinated against common cat diseases and tested for FIV and FeLV (diseases of the immune system) and are microchipped.
