Crews arrived to find a grass and brush fire on a hill near a house. It took firefighters about 20 minutes to extinguish the flames, and another hour of putting out multiple hot spots found in stumps.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but appears to be accidental. No property was lost.

The fire did threaten to burn a garage, but no damage was incurred.

The property owners had a clear defendable space around their house. Cornelius Fire Department staff suggests maintaining a 30-foot barrier around rural-area homes with no dead vegetation, vegetation near or against houses, and tree limbs trimmed 10 feet from the ground. Additionally, they recommend keeping grass cut short 100 feet around homes, removing any twigs or leaves, and keeping space between trees and bushes.
