Hillsboro Tribune photographer Christopher Oertell caught up with 11-year-old Abby Brown last week, as she went door-to-door taking orders for Girl Scout cookies, which go on sale next month.
Every year, Brown, a cadet in Troop No. 45671 in Hillsboro, plans to sell 500 boxes of cookies, but usually blows that goal out of the water. In each of the past two years, Brown has sold more than 1,000 boxes of cookies. Three days after cookie pre-orders went live. One day after preorders for cookies went on sale, she had already sold over 170 boxes.
Brown, who attends Forest Hills Lutheran Christian School in Cornelius, estimates that only about one-quarter of her cookie sales come from door sales. The rest come from sales at local grocery stores, which start next month.
All of the money from cookie sales go back into the local region. Brown's troop has voted to donate part of the money to Hillsboro-based non-profit Rock'n Rooms, which decorates hospital rooms for children at Doernbecher Children's Hospital.
Cookies will be on sale through March 11.
