Alexander Flores will take on Monte Akers in May election to represent Senate Dist. 15.

FloresThe chairman of Centro Cultural de Washington County has thrown his hat into a race to represent Forest Grove and Hillsboro in the state senate.

Alexander Flores has filed to run for Senate District 15, which includes Hillsboro, Forest Grove, Cornelius and North Plains.

"Throughout my life, and as a strong community supporter and volunteer, I have learned a lot about leadership." Flores said in a written statement. "I believe good leaders go where the problems are to make a difference, and that is exactly what I intend to do if elected."

Flores ran unsuccessfully for the Hillsboro School Board last year. In a written statement, Flores said politics in Salem and Washington, D.C. have become too polarizing. He pointed to a plan by Oregon Senate Democrats to update a controversial state business tax break and provide tax breaks for middle- and low-income Oregonians as a catalyst for him joining the race.

That planned stalled last week, and lawmakers pulled the plans, saying it didn't have enough traction to move forward.

"We are not being heard," Flores said.

Flores will face off again former Hillsboro School Board member Monte Akers in the May Republican primary. The winner of that race will take on the winner of the Democratic primary in November.

The seat is currently held by Democrat Chuck Riley, who has served in the Senate since 2015. Riley filed for re-election in September.

Flores has served on the board of Centro Cultural de Washington County since 2014. The Cornelius-based nonprofit serves the county's Latino families with cultural, career and civic programs.

Flores has already secured the endorsement of Salem's Senate Minority Leader, Jackie Winters, R-Salem, who called the Hillsboro grandfather of two a successful leader in his community.

"We are excited about his candidacy and his vision," Winters said. "I am confident that he will bring innovative, new ideas that help constituents in Senate District 15."
