Hillsboro burglary suspect arrested after crashing stolen car
The Washington County Sheriff's Office and Hillsboro Police Department have arrested a man they say of robbing a handful of Hillsboro businesses and lead police on a chase through Hillsboro and Cornelius early Friday morning.
Verlon Thompson, 53, of Texas, faces charges of possession of a stolen vehicle, unlawful use of a motor vehicle, two counts of attempting to elude police and reckless driving.
According to the Washington County Sheriff's Office, deputies first spotted Thompson driving a red 1997 Chevrolet Camaro at about 3 a.m., Friday, April 6. Thompson was reportedly seen driving away from a business near Southeast Walnut Street and 10th Avenue in Hillsboro. Deputies found the vehicle in the early morning hour suspicious and pulled over to investigate, where deputies reportedly saw signs of forced entry into the business, according to a statement from the Washington County Sheriff's Office.
About 20 minutes later, another deputy spotted the same vehicle leaving a second business, this time along Baseline Street and Southwest 17th Avenue, the Sheriff's Office said. Deputies said this business had also been broken into. Burglary tools were reportedly found at the scene.
When deputies attempted to stop the Camaro, the vehicle sped off, leading police on a pursuit through Hillsboro and into Cornelius, the Sheriff's Office said.
Authorities attempted to stop the vehicle, but were unsuccessful until the Camaro attempted to cross a set of railroad tracks along a dead-end street in Cornelius. The vehicle crashed and Thompson allegedly led police on a short foot race before he was arrested.
A passenger in the car, who was not named by the Sheriff's Office, was not injured in the crash.
Investigators allege Thompson stole the Camaro during the night from a local car lot. Stolen property was reportedly found inside the car.
Thompson is being held at the Washington County Jail on $10,000 bail.
Deputies say additional charges are likely in the case as the investigation continues.
