MORE STORIES

The newspaper's travel section has endorsed Hillsboro as the suburb to visit when visiting Portland.

Readers of the Los Angeles Times newspaper were treated to a story last week about the best secondary cities to visit while on vacation, and Hillsboro was among them.

The story, which ran in the Times' travel section, was aimed at getting travelers to explore more than just the big cities. The article included a list of "secondary cities" to visit while partaking in the larger "destination" cities travelers were experiencing.

"Consider smaller destinations and enjoy the savings, whether you're using the second city as a destination or as a launching pad," author Terry Gardner wrote on Aug. 13.

The newspaper's only Northwest recommendation didn't suggest travelers stop by Beaverton, Gresham or Vancouver, Wash., when visiting the Rose City. Instead, the article suggested travelers make their way west to Hillsboro.

"Hillsboro … can provide a place to lay your head for less per night than in Portland," Gardner wrote, adding that people should check out the Tualatin Valley's many vineyards, and the craft beer scene in and around Hillsboro. The article also encouraged adventurous tourists to get out onto the Tualatin River, for kayaking, fishing and wildlife viewing.

The author didn't mention the city's other local attractions, such as the Hillsboro Tuesday Night Market, the annual Oregon International Airshow planned for September, the concerts at the Glenn & Viola Walters Cultural Arts Center, the Rice Northwest Museum of Rocks and Minerals, the Hillsboro Hops or any of the city's shopping destinations, such as downtown or the Street of Tanasbourne.

Perhaps, once a few Los Angeles tourists visit Washington County, future articles will be updated with additional places to visit.

Alongside Hillsboro, Gardner suggested exploring Oakland, Ventura and Indian Wells, Calif., as well as Mesa, Arizona, outside of Phoenix.
