The next Shakespeare could be reading from his or her work in downtown Hillsboro this month at Bards & Brews, the latest addition to Hillsboro’s growing literary arts scene.

Held the last Friday of each month at Primrose & Tumbleweeds, a wine bar and restaurant, the event allows listeners to sip craft brews or sample wines while local authors tell their stories and read from their books.

This month’s authors include award-winning writer and professor Gina Ochsner, who teaches in the low-residency Master of Fine Arts program at Seattle Pacific University. Her work has been published in “The New Yorker,” “Tin House,” and the “Kenyon Review.” Ochsner’s most recent book is “The Russian Dreambook of Colour and Flight.”

Joining Ochsner will be Andy R. Bunch, whose independently published book, “Suffering Rancor,” is an adventure-fantasy novel that follows the story of a princess teamed up with a kid from the swamp.

Vancouver author Brian Tashima will also speak. Tashima’s independent book, “The Secret of the Songshell,” is based loosely on the real-life experiences of his son, who has a form of autism.

Gary Reavis, a former high-tech industry worker, is developing a series titled “The Tennessee Tinys,” about tiny people from Ireland who move to the Tennessee hills. “The Telling” follows the 17-year-old boy who is next in line to care for the Tinys and the greedy businessman who threatens to steal the Tinys’ fortune.

A fifth author at next Friday’s reading is Rory Miller, a former corrections officer who has penned “Meditations on Violence: A Comparison of Martial Arts Training and Real World Violence.”

Bards & Brews is a collaborative effort between the Northwest Independent Writers Association (NIWA), Primrose & Tumbleweeds and Jacobsen’s Books & More.

“We are building community through the love of reading and writing,” said Jacobsen’s owner Tina Jacobsen. “We see a lot of authors supporting other authors as well as readers who want to read about local topics and support local writers.”
