Mike Keeler, Vic's Auto Center - LAKE OSWEGO AUTO REPAIR INSIDERAuto safety is of paramount importance - not just for drivers and their passengers - but other vehicles, bicycles and pedestrians on the road.

September is a good time to think about child safety, with kids headed back to school and Child Passenger Safety Week on the horizon.

The Oregon DMV reminds drivers that the speed limit is 20 mph or less in a school zone in any of the following situations:

• Any time a yellow light of a school speed sign is flashing

• Between 7 am and 5 pm on school days

• Crosswalks near school grounds when children are present

Don't pass a stopped school bus! Drivers must stop on the street or highway 20 feet or more from any school bus that has stopped and is flashing red warning lights.

This applies both to vehicles approaching from the rear and from the opposing lanes. All lanes of traffic must stop for the school bus, except in opposing lanes if the highway is divided with a center median. No vehicle may proceed until the bus resumes motion and has turned off the red warning lights.

Car seats - Every 33 seconds, one child under the age of 13 is involved in a crash. Many times, deaths and injuries can be prevented with proper use of car seats, boosters and seat belts. Child Passenger Safety Week, Sept. 23-29, is sponsored by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Visit www.safercar.gov to find installation instructions.

Safe travels!
