Nothing could have better timing than the new memory wing at The Springs at Carman Oaks in Lake Oswego.

The number of people in the U.S. with dementia is exploding, with 24 million today and 80 million expected by 2040. Lake Oswego, with its large population of senior citizens, is affected by this situation.

But The Springs at Carman Oaks is taking one big step toward meeting this challenge.

“There is a huge need,” said Katrina Shiroma, executive director of the senior living center. “There is not enough for the rising numbers of people with dementia, but we are excited to provide this memory wing. It provides everything, especially safety and security, needed by someone suffering from Alzheimer’s or any disease related to dementia. It’s state of the art. It has all of the bells and whistles. All of our staff has Alzheimer’s-endorsed care training.”

Building a memory wing was planned from the time The Springs purchased Carman Oaks last November, and the big renovation was revealed in August. Residents at the new memory wing can find a card game or a sing-along at almost any time, day or night.

“We have activities all the time, because some of our residents don’t sleep at night,” Shiroma said. “We have music, art, exercise and fitness, cooking. We have outings and drives. We figure out their level of need and help them find their best activity program.

“Living here is not about lying in bed behind closed doors. This is a great way to experience senior living,” she said.

Nancy Raske of Northwest Senior Resources is called a “good friend” of The Springs by Shiroma. Raske has placed several residents at the facility, and she has long campaigned for more memory wings in the Lake Oswego area.

“In my senior placement business I see the increased need for secured memory care almost daily,” Raske said. “The demand is beginning to surpass the Portland metro-Lake Oswego supply area. Many memory care communities now have wait lists for dementia care.

“Lake Oswego is fortunate to have an excellent company opening a new memory care at The Springs at Carman Oaks.”
