Through May 20 — See "John Hughes High: The 1980s Teen Musical" at Artists Repertory Theatre, 1516 S.W. Alder St., Portland. The piece was written with inclusive casting in mind, offering opportunities to mix and match gender, race and ethnic identity as needed to work with the strong suits of each company performing the work. A sold-out 2017 Fertile Ground Festival paved the way for this world premiere as part of the Staged! season. Showtimes at 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday. May 12 (8 a.m. to 1 p.m.) — West Linn Riverview Lions Club Spring Plant Sale at Bolton Primary School, 5933 Holmes St. West Linn. Great selection of hanging baskets for sun and shade, flowering bedding plants and veggie starts.
May 12 (2 to 5 p.m.) — T-Mobile Lake Oswego hosts a free barbecue as a thank you for donations to its Health & Hygiene Drive. Bring unopened hygiene items such as toothpaste and toothbrushes, travel size shampoo, razers and other items to the store for Portland Rescue Mission. The drive continues to May 20.
May 12 (7:30 p.m.) — Cascadia Composers presents "Our Waters: Big River to the Pacific," featuring works by Northwest composers, storytellers Ed Edmo and Will Hornyak and art by Bonnie Meltzer at the Native American Student Center at Portland State University, 710 S.W. May 14 (7 p.m.) — Lake Theater and Cafe's Music Monday concert is Wild is the Wind: The Music of Nina Simone, performed by LaRhonda Steele and Julie Amici on vocals, Mark Steele on piano, Dean Mueller on bass, Pete Moss on sax and Carlton Jackson on drums. Tickets are $20 at laketheatercafe.com. Doors open at 6 p.m. at 106 N. State St., Lake Oswego.
May 16 (7:30 p.m.) — White Bird Dance Series will present Ballet Hispanico at Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall in Portland. The program features the works of three Latina choreographers. Tickets range in price from $26 to $74. Learn more online at whitebird.org.
