Random acts of kindness brighten the halls of Lakeridge High

Associated Student Body members held something of a happiness campaign, performing random acts of kindness for the two weeks preceding winter break. The snowfall was the piéce de résistance with fluffy flakes beckoning high schoolers as soon as they arrived at school. by: SUBMITTED PHOTO: SOPHIE RICHARDS - Lakeridge junior Nick Rooney, left, and junior Jonathan Grace smile at each other while Bryce Anderson, ASB president, passes by.

The ASB team used its fundraiser-funded budget to buy a snow machine, letting it pour forth its water-based mixture onto tarps. Students flung themselves down to make angels or tossed snowballs at each other.

Bryce Anderson, ASB president, said the concept came about during brainstorming sessions.

“We thought, what’s one thing we can do that will bring smiles to everyone’s faces and involve everybody in the school, and we wanted to go with the holiday theme and the holiday spirit, so we thought: what better way than snow?” Anderson said.

Since ASB now owns the snow machine, the event could be a legacy for this year’s seniors, he said.

ASB’s random acts of kindness are a tradition, but doing one every day for two weeks was new. Organizers put sticky notes on every locker with cheery notes such as “smile today,” “it’s a great day to be a Pacer” and “you’re beautiful inside and out.”

One morning, ASB students handed small cups of hot chocolate to surprise sleepy Pacers, and another time teachers were treated to coffee.

“It’s small things that go a long way, and a lot of them don’t take a whole lot of time but still can bring smiles to people’s faces,” Anderson said.
