School is back in session this week, and so much is planned for the coming weeks that it’s hard to keep track of it all. For starters:

Lakeridge and Lake Oswego high schools kick off their football seasons on Friday. Cross country, lacrosse, soccer, volleyball and other sports also will be in full swing.Photo Credit: REVIEW PHOTO: VERN UYETAKE - Alyssa Gustaff helps incoming sixth-grader Khushi Arora on the first day of classes at LOJHS.

  • Keep an eye out for whooping sirens and cheering crowds on A Avenue on Sept. 19 and Oct. 17. Lakeridge’s homecoming week is in just two weeks, culminating in a parade at 2 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 19. The LOHS homecoming parade will come marching through town at 1:45 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 17. The LOHS parade is usually over by 2 p.m.

Both parades are short and start at Christ Church Episcopal Parish, 1060 Chandler Road, before heading down A Avenue.Photo Credit: REVIEW PHOTO: VERN UYETAKE - Laimis Hainley unloads his school supplies on his first day of first grade at Hallinan.

  • There’s a back-to-school barbecue at 5 p.m. on Sept. 19 at Lakeridge Junior High, 4700 Jean Road. Lake Oswego Junior High has its barbecue this Friday; the school’s at 2500 Country Club Road, across the street from the high school.

At every school, there are back-to-school nights, plays, closures — there’s so much to stay on top of. Here are a few of the most important dates, culled from the Lake Oswego School District and individual school calendars. Early release dates

The Lake Oswego School Board approved changes to K-12 schedules last school year that parents will see in effect in 2014-15, including early release times.

  • A bi-monthly early release time of 1:20 p.m. on Thursdays will be in effect at elementary schools, which is about two hours earlier than usual. The K-5 dates are Sept. 11 and 25, Oct. 9 and 23, Nov. 6 and 20, Dec. 11, Jan. 8, Feb. 5 and 19, March 5, April 9 and 23, and May 7 and 21.

  • Junior high schools will continue their 2:05 p.m. weekly early release time on Thursdays. The regular release time is 2:49 p.m. For grades 6-8, the dates are: today, Sept. 11, 18 and 25; Oct. 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30; Nov. 6 and 13; Dec. 4, 11 and 18; Jan. 8, 15, 22 and 29; Feb. 5, 12, 19 and 26; March 5 and 12; April 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30; May 7, 14, 21 and 28; and June 4.

  • There will be no early release time for high schools.

Teachers want the extra time during the early release days to analyze where their students need to improve to better understand Common Core State Standards and to prepare for Common Core’s corresponding new state tests in spring 2015. Common Core, a new curriculum, is being formally implemented this year.

The early release days also will provide time for teachers in small, grade-level or department groups called data teams to examine results from assessments and adjust instructional strategies accordingly. Off days

Furlough days (unpaid leave) will continue this year for LOSD employees. They’ll be held on Nov. 26 (the day before Thanksgiving), March 20 (the day after an in-service day for grades K-12), and May 26, the day after Memorial Day.
