LO dance studio sweeps top honors at dance event in Puerto Rico

Kristy Higgins has taken home many trophies in her career as a dance instructor, but she has never made a haul like her Step it Up Studios of Lake Oswego accomplished at the Caribbean Dancesport Classic in Puerto Rico from Oct. 31 to Nov. 4.

Higgins’ eight dancers, including herself, took top honors in every division, and, of course, Step it Up won the top dance studio award. The mantel above the fireplace at her studio on A Avenue is now lined with silver trophies. It was an extremely well-earned victory.

“There were 680 entries at the contest and I was in every heat,” said Higgins, formerly a musical theater choreographer in New York City. “This was special for a few reasons. One is that this is my own school. Second, this is the first time that every single one of my students won their overall divisions.”

The award winners were:

  • Overall first place top studio — Step it Up Studios
  • Overall first place top teacher — Kristy Higgins
  • Overall second place top teacher — Stas Trilisky
  • Overall top female student — Roxanne Thomas
  • Overall top male student — David Harris
  • Overall top amateur couple — Larry and Judy Fox
  • First top bronze female student — Heather McPherson
  • First place bronze male — Robert Hunter
  • First place top silver female — Fran Dishman
  • First place silver male — Larry Fox
  • All of the above also received top 20 overall student awards.

“This contest showed that our instruction was superior to other competitors,” Higgins said. “Between us (Higgins and Trilisky) we cover 19 styles of dancing.”

The event was a true highlight for the dance school, which has been open for less than two years. The dancers were extremely well prepared.

Higgins said, “Most of our students have been here since we opened. They also take a lot of private lessons and coaching.”

Step it Up Studios is located at 101 A Ave. For more information, visit or call 503 744-0105.
