LO's Susan Schrader working to expand support for annual CureSearch Walk

When Susan Schrader’s young niece, Ella, was diagnosed with cancer she immediately wanted to do something to help.

Ella, at only 10 years old, has since passed away, but the Lake Oswego woman is pushing harder than ever as a volunteer for Portland’s CureSearch Walk for Children’s Cancer. by: REVIEW PHOTO: CLIFF NEWELL - Susan Schrader is committed to building support in Lake Oswego for the CureSearch Walk in August in Portland.

“This is a way of focusing my efforts,” Schrader said. “Lake Oswego is my own town, so this is where I want to raise awareness.”

This will be only the third year for the CureSearch Walk, and last year it attracted 300 participants in Portland. Schrader thinks that number should be much higher, and since she is on the volunteer committee for the first time she can do something about it in Lake Oswego.

“Before we had families who had children affected by cancer,” Schrader said. “We need people not affected by cancer to make this a big event. We want to get some traction.”

Lamb’s Palisades Thriftway is providing a big boost by hosting a wine and cheese benefit for the CureSearch Walk on June 20 from 4 to 7 p.m. For a donation of $10 per patron, those attending can taste wines and cheese and also learn how to pair wine and cheese in a sublime fashion.

In addition, Schrader will have a booth at the Lake Oswego Farmers’ Market on July 20.

“I’ll also be putting up posters all over the place,” she said.

Schrader’s commitment to fight pediatric cancer started three years ago when Ella was stricken with the dread disease, the same year the CureSearch Walk was first held.

“My sister said, ‘Let’s walk,’ and we walked,” Schrader said.

Now her efforts are at a higher level.

“We want to make people aware of how pediatric cancer is such a major problem and that there must be additional funding and additional support,” Schrader said.

Portland’s CureSearch Walk will be held Aug. 10 at Sellwood Riverfront Park in Portland.

Lamb’s Palisades Thriftway market is located at 1377 McVey Ave. in Lake Oswego.
