Bottles of wine boost boutique experience at LO retirement community

It is time to toast The Stafford.

The Lake Oswego retirement community on Overlook Drive was already great, but now it is even more special because The Stafford has launched its own wine label. So the “boutique” retirement experience offered by the community is even stronger. by: SUBMITTED - Mike Thayer gave a presentation when The Stafford held a party in May to announce its new wine label.

“Having our own wine is pretty unique,” Rita Segura, director of marketing at The Stafford. “It’s another thing that will make people want to look at The Stafford.”

It is due to Mike Thayer that The Stafford is making its venture into wine. Thayer already had a close association with The Stafford because his father, retired U.S. Army Gen. James Thayer, and mother, Pat, are residents there. Thayer is the proud owner of Pete’s Mountain Vineyard, practically just up the road from The Stafford, so two years ago he formed a business relationship with the community. This has been a great way for Thayer to promote his winery.

“It’s another way for the people at The Stafford to round out their experience,” Thayer said. “The wine is offered to residents, friends and family. It’s another way for the residents to enjoy their golden years. I’m lucky to be part of the experience.”

“Mike orchestrated the whole thing,” Segura said. “The wine is a great resource here and for the community outside.”

The wines offered are The Stafford Stoneridge Vineyard 2012 pinot gris ($22 a bottle) and The Stafford Pete’s Mountain Vineyard pinot noir ($30). If you are lucky, Segura will offer you a taste test.

On the back of each bottle is the story of Pete’s Mountain Winery. This will probably whet your appetite to visit Thayer’s winery in person and get a firsthand experience of what Pete’s Mountain Vineyard is all about.

“We can explain about our wine community and philosophy,” Thayer said. “People can come here to see the grapes being grown and the beauty of this vineyard. They can have a world-class wine experience in one of the great areas of Oregon.”

Segura noted that the addition of its own wine label goes perfectly with The Stafford’s increased emphasis on its restaurant, The Mélange, and catering business.
