LiningerClackamas and Multnomah county commissioners have chosen Ann Lininger as the new state representative for House District 38.

Lininger, a past Clackamas County commissioner, succeeds former Rep. Chris Garrett, who resigned in late December to take a seat as a judge on the Oregon Court of Appeals.

District 38 includes Lake Oswego and Southwest Portland. Because it reaches into two counties, the Clackamas and Multnomah boards of commissioners held a joint meeting at the West End Building in Lake Oswego on Jan. 29 to choose the new representative. Their votes were weighted according to how much of the district is within their respective counties.

Lininger, a Lake Oswego resident who serves as general counsel and a vice president at the manufacturing company Oregon Iron Works, was one choice on a slate of three candidates advanced by state Democratic party leaders. The others were attorney and lobbyist Sonya Fischer, whose law office is in downtown Lake Oswego, and Southwest Portland neighborhood activist Moses Ross, founder of a political telemarketing service for the Democratic Party.

Lininger served on the Clackamas County Board of Commissioners from 2009 to 2012.

In a letter announcing her run for the state seat, she highlighted her efforts as a commissioner to support the creation of school-based health clinics, food programs for the hungry and services to help adults escape domestic abuse, as well as her support of programs that helped businesses.

“I have a proven ability to get things done and a track record of working across the aisle to solve problems,” she wrote. “As state representative I would work to strengthen our public schools, create a good business environment so existing and new companies can create more sustainable, family wage jobs and ensure people in desperate situations can get the help they need.”

Lininger will represent House District 38 for the remainder of Garrett’s term, through the end of this year. The new legislative session began Monday.
