Flames shoot up on the deck of a home on Egan Way in Lake Oswego. The fire was reported by a neighbor who saw smoke in the back of the house. Damage is estimated around $75,000.

Two structure fires that occurred about 45 minutes apart on Monday caused damage to two homes.

The first fire, at 4321 South Shore Blvd., was reported by a Lake Oswego Fire Department firefighter who is assigned to inspections.

No one was home at the time and no injuries resulted from the fire, which caused $25,000 damage.

Firefighter Paul Lauritzon was driving down South Shore Boulevard around 1:30 p.m., when he smelled smoke.

'I turned and looked around, when I saw smoke coming from the back of the house,' Lauritzon said.

He quickly called 911 to alert firefighters and then grabbed the home's garden hose to contain the fire.

His action prevented the fire from going into the garage and kept this fire small until the first fire equipment arrived, according to the Lake Oswego Fire Department. The fire was completely extinguished in about 10 minutes. Lake Oswego responded with three engines, one ladder truck and three chief officers and was assisted by Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue.

Investigators determined that a pile of wood was stacked directly up against the exhaust of a backup generator that automatically started for a monthly check.

As crews were cleaning up from this fire, another fire was reported at 1828 Egan Way just after 2:20 p.m. This fire was reported by a neighbor who saw smoke from the back of the house.

Lake Oswego was assisted by Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue and Portland Fire.

When crews arrived, they found heavy fire from the back side of the garage. When the first crew was extinguishing the fire, one of the firefighters was injured when he twisted his ankle. The firefighter, from Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue, was transported to a local hospital for evaluation.

Fire investigators have not found a cause and damage is estimated around $75,000.
