The Pacers lead most of the way before falling 43-40 against Barlow in Fridays play-in qualifier

by: PAMPLIN MEDIA GROUP: DAVID BALL - Lakeridge guard Natalie Bristol looks to make a pass from the top of the key during the first half of the teams 43-40 loss at Barlow on Friday.GRESHAM — The Lakeridge girls basketball team was on the verge of extending their season Friday night before Barlow swooped in and pulled the magic carpet out from under them in the final minutes to steal a 43-40 win in the play-in qualifier game.

The Pacers took a 31-25 late in the third quarter after Natalie Bristol drove into the lane and got a shot to fall despite taking a heavy bump on her way to the basket.

Lakeridge maintained its lead when Shea Northfield turned a steal into a fastbreak layin that put the Pacers up by five heading into the fourth quarter.

The host Bruins battled back and took the lead when Haylee Hutzler grabbed a rebound along the baseline and somehow swished one through from behind the backboard with 5:03 to play.

Barlow maintained a slight edge down the stretch, but Lakeridge wasn’t ready for its season to be finished. The Pacers pulled to within 40-38 with 1:17 to play when Sydney Lautze came away with a steal, and teammate Susan Irving scored on a putback attempt at the front of the rim.

After a missed free throw by the Bruins, Northfield zipped down the court for a layin that cut the margin to a single point with 20.1 seconds left.

Barlow point guard Bethany Leliefeld supplied the night’s final points at the free-throw line, and the Pacers’ desperation heave at the buzzer never left the ground when the Bruins intercepted a long pass at half court.

Lakeridge overcame an early 11-4 deficit, pulling ahead early in the second period when center Maddie Rabing got loose under the basket on an inbounds play.

The Pacers put together a 14-point burst and kept Barlow off the scoreboard for almost 10 minutes. Lakeridge found itself up 18-11 midway through the second period after Northfield launched a long pass over the top to Shekina Boe, who beat a crowd of Bruins to the hoop for a layin.
