Three returners and a talented freshman lead Lake Oswego this spring

by: VERN UYETAKE - Claire Carter is one of three returning varsity players for Lake Oswego. The Lakers have qualified for state each of the past two seasons. Lake Oswego's girls golf team features a bit of experience and some bright young talent and the Lakers hope that combination is enough to earn them a third consecutive trip to state.

Lake Oswego had a large turnout of 16 golfers this year, many of whom were younger players. Coach Mark Shoff hopes this leads to some in-team competition for the final varsity spots week to week.

“There's a lot of young talent and there's not a lot of drop-off. There's seven or eight kids who should compete for that last spot,” Shoff said.

The Lakers have three returning varsity players. Jessica Lee is back as one of the squad's most seasoned players.

“She's someone who's very capable of shooting in the 80s for us,” Shoff said.

Claire Carter also returns and will fill in as Lake Oswego's No. 3 golfer while Taylor Yob also has experience at the varsity level.

Taking over as the Lakers' No. 1 golfer is Cami Dozois, a talented freshman who was a starter on the girls soccer team this year and also a point guard on the varsity basketball team.

“She's obviously a really talented athlete and golf might actually be her best sport. I really tried hard recruiting her for the team,” Shoff said.

Dozois shot an 85 at the opening tournament of the season at Tualatin Country Club but she has the ability to consistently be in the 70s this year.

“She should be one of the top two or three girls in our league,” Shoff said.

Shoff believes that Dozois and Lee at the top of his roster will give the Lakers some stability this season.

Lake Oswego finished third at the Tualatin Invitational behind West Linn and Sheldon, two teams that should vie for the state championship this season.

West Linn figures to be practically untouchable in the TRL this season but Lake Oswego will be very much in the hunt for the No. 2 spot.

Clackamas also should give Lake Oswego a run but the team hopes to qualify for state and post a lower number than it did last spring.

Currently the Lakers are trying to get as much time on the links as possible as they prep for their first league meet at Portland Golf Club after spring break.
