Riverdale High School girls snowboarding team captured the 2012 Oregon Interscholastic Snowboarding Association (OISA) State Snowboard Championship - the Sato Cup - March 17. This three-day event held at Mt. Bachelor included over 185 snowboarders representing 24 high schools. This is Riverdale's first state championship and the first time (in memorable history) that a Metro League team has won this trophy. Riverdale High School, a 2A school competed against mostly 6A teams from across the State.

This was a great season for Riverdale's snowboarding team with nine students qualifying for the State Championships at Mt. Bachelor this year. The nine qualifiers were Chase Fetig, Colton Stellway, Henry Leasia, Tiffany Puterbaugh, Evy Borkan, Lucy Parkin, Taylor Penner-Ash and Ellie Barlett.

The team dedicated their season to their coaches Casey Sobolewski and Ben Beavon. Sobolewski lost his longtime partner Liz to cancer, and Beavon was so severely injured in a snowboarding accident that he was life-flighted off the mountain.

Despite his personal loss, Sobolewski coached the team to this incredible accomplishment.

Riverdale took 2nd place in Banked Slalom, 1st place in Slopestyle and 2nd place in Halfpipe in addition to the ultimate prize - the Sato Cup.

This is the trophy given to one team each year for the entire state. Each girl scored individually in each competition and was also awarded a medal for their individual accomplishments.

Between winning individual and team medals, the girls count 15 medals between them.
