Lakeridge boys cross country takes second at Chapman Invitational
Day by day and week by week, the Lakeridge and Lake Oswego cross country teams are testing themselves against the best and finding out where they stand.
Last week, the Pacers and Lakers ran in the Nike Bill Chapman Invitational at Hillsboro's Rood Bridge Park on Aug. 31, battling 20 other teams for top honors in the day's non-league 5,000-meters races.
On the boys side, the Pacers stepped up to finish second among 21 teams with 93 points and trailing only event-winner Jesuit's 20.
For Lakeridge, sophomore Paul Corso was the team's top finisher in 10th place with a time of 17:14.92. He was followed by teammates: Aidan Strealy, 12th at 17:20.29; Jack Chapman, 16th at 17:34.78; Henry Potter, 21st at 17:47.18; and Evan Wheeler, 34th at 18:05.44.
Lake Oswego's boys team placed 11th with 257 points, its efforts led by sophomore Marcus David, who finished 15th with a time of 17:31.18. The rest of the Lakers' varsity scorers were: Colin Hennessey, 25th at 17:51.84; Matthew Zimmerman, 62nd at 18:54.04; Eric Sasadeusz, 75th at 19:07.23; and Luke Wiens, 101st at 20:01.69.
On the girls side, Lakeridge finished with 301 points and placed 13th among 15 teams. The Pacers were led there by freshman Holly Lane, who placed ninth at 21:26.82. The rest of the team's varsity finishers were: Amber Miller, 72nd at 24:22.12; Audrey Eucker, 80th at 25:14.61; Sadie Fashana, 81st at 25:16.11; and Nancy Bignell, 84th at 25:22.25.
While Lake Oswego did not field a complete varsity girls team, senior Grace David ran to 17th place with a time of 21:00.35, while teammate Julianna Musgrove finished 85th at 25:29.20.
Next week, Lake Oswego opens the Three Rivers League season with a three-way meet against Canby and St. Mary's at Westmoreland Park on Sept. 13, with the girls varsity race set for 5:30 p.m. and the boys varsity race due to start at 6 p.m.
For Lakeridge, the Pacers run in the Saxon Invitational at Salem's Bush Park on Saturday, with the girls varsity race set for 12:45 p.m. and the boys varsity race to follow at 1:30 p.m. Lakeridge then opens the Three Rivers League season with a three-way meet against Newberg and Sherwood at Sherwood High School on Sept. 13, with the girls varsity race set for 5:30 p.m. and the boys varsity race due to start at 6 p.m.
