WLACC events and activities

It’s a given that West Linn Adult Community Center’s seniors will see the passing of many members — all of us, sooner or later. But this reality doesn’t diminish the sadness when one of our most gracious, kind and sweet members passes on.

Lois Haatia died on Dec. 21, 2012, at the age of 82, after several years fighting Alzheimer’s disease. She and her husband, Lloyd, ate lunch three times a week at the WLACC for years, and their presence became so familiar and expected that if they didn’t show up, disappointment and worry ensued.

Haatia was born in Moorhead, Minn., and moved to Oregon in 1942. She graduated from Astoria High School in 1948 and married Lloyd in Portland in 1952. She loved to paint, enjoyed playing bridge, fishing, dancing, traveling and heading out in a RV.

She was a devout member of West Linn Lutheran Church where she served as secretary, bookkeeper and Sunday school teacher. She was active as a den mother for the Boy Scouts and with Camp Fire Girls.

The couple have four children, eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren. One of Haatia’s firm convictions was that all her children would go to church every Sunday. So the West Linn Lutheran Church, where a service was held for her on Jan. 5, was familiar territory to the entire Haatia family.

We will always remember her husband gently escorting her to lunch and bringing her a plate from the buffet even after her disease left her unable to converse or recognize very many of us. She was sweet and good-natured to the end and it was clear she enjoyed being with us, her friends, at the WLACC. And we enjoyed her, too.
