The West Linn Adult Community Center will hold its annual Mother’s Day Luncheon Tea celebrating all mothers — indeed, all women — on May 13 at noon. Various and sundry tea sandwiches, fruit, cookies, etc. will be served by elegantly tuxedoed SUBMITTED PHOTO - Model Alice Johansson poses with John Ferenz, who served as emcee of the Mother's Day event in 2011.

Smoking hot senior models will display spring/summer accessories in an on-site fashion show. The gift shop will be open so that those inclined may purchase said accessories.

You need not be a mother, daughter or even female to participate, and we strongly encourage the wearing of “tea hats” to the event, regardless of your gender, because a sumptuous prize will be awarded the person with the most outstanding headwear.

Because of the event’s popularity, we are asking all those wishing to attend to make reservations ahead of time by paying the $13 fee at the front desk or by calling the center at 503-557-4704. Tickets will not be available at the door.

On an unrelated note, if you don’t know that next Sunday is a Mexican/American holiday celebrated here more broadly even than in Mexico, you might also not know that back in 1912, Hellmann’s mayonnaise was manufactured in England. (Be patient. This will come together.)

In fact, the Titanic was carrying 12,000 jars of the condiment scheduled for delivery in Vera Cruz, Mexico, which was to be the next port of call for the great ship after its stop in New York.

This would have been the largest single shipment of mayonnaise ever delivered to Mexico. But as we know, the great ship did not make it to New York. The ship hit an iceberg and sank and the cargo was forever lost.

The people of Mexico, who were crazy about mayonnaise and were eagerly awaiting its delivery, were disconsolate at the loss. Their anguish was so great, that they declared a National Day of Mourning, which they still observe to this day.  The National Day of Mourning occurs each year on May 5 and is known, of course, as (wait for it) Sinko de Mayo. We will celebrate this event with a Mexican lunch, heavy on mayonnaise, on Monday, May 6.
