World Class Wines is hosting a benefit wine tasting for Merry Heart Children’s Camp, a special project of Rob McDonald and Mary Rice, retired medical professionals from Doernbecher Children’s Hospital Pediatric Cardiac Department.

McDonald and Rice recognized that there are many summer camps for children with special needs, but none for children with heart conditions.

McDonald, a retired senior cardiac sonographer from Doernbecher Childrens’ Hospital, and Rice, professor emeritus and retired Doernbecher pediatric cardiologist, formed a board of medical professionals, family and friends to provide a camp for these children.

The mission of the Merry Heart Children’s Camp is to provide a safe, nurturing and fun outdoor experience for children and teens with heart conditions so they can experience courage, independence and friendship without fear of being judged by others.

The Merry Heart Children’s Camp will hold its first session Aug. 25-29 at CYO/Camp Howard, located 50 miles east of Portland between Sandy and Corbett.

Activities offered at Camp Howard include swimming in a heated pool, fishing, hiking, archery, basketball, outdoor sports, arts and crafts and campfires. Food will be prepared by the Camp Howard cooks. Campers will sleep in cabins that accommodate seven to eight campers and two counselors.

To help build financial support for the camp, a special wine tasting will be held at World Class Wines, 269 A Ave., Lake Oswego, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Feb. 25. The public is invited to come and taste wines from around the world and enjoy appetizers. Cost of the event is $30; a portion of that benefits Merry Heart Children’s Camp. In addition, World Class Wines will donate 10 percent to the camp of all wine sales made during the event.
