Blessings knit into each special piece

Members of Willamette United Methodist Church are in stitches, literally.

“We are knitting or crocheting prayer shawls,” church member Mary Lou Ball said. “As a person creates a shawl, many blessings are prayed into each stitch. When the prayer shawl is done, it is given a final blessing from our congregation.”

Ball said the prayer shawl ministry began in Connecticut in 1998, as a symbol of God’s unconditional, inclusive love.

The shawls are given to people with serious medical issues, those suffering bereavement, loss or stress. Ball said those who have received the shawls have been uplifted, “as if given wings to fly above their troubles ... My father-in-law, Roscoe Ball, is 94 years young and loves his cozy prayer shawl.”

Anyone in the area can request a prayer shawl from WUMC. Call 503-656-9580 and leave your name, reason for the prayer shawl and a phone number for a return call.
