Crash on Highway 213 in Mulino results in death of motorcyclist
A two-vehicle collision on Highway 213 near S. Union Mills Road in Mulino Tuesday night resulted in the death of a motorcyclist after officials from the Oregon State Police say he rear-ended a vehicle and was ejected from his motorcycle.
According to a press release from OSP, Vincent Michael Merkley, 26, of Molalla, was operating a red 2006 custom Bigdog motorcycle traveling northbound on Highway 213 around 8:30 p.m. June 27 at a "high rate of speed and in a reckless manner" when he rear-ended a silver 2007 Jeep Liberty, operated by Kaelin Craig Bennett, 25, also of Molalla.
Upon impact, Merkley was ejected from the motorcycle, and the motorcycle came to rest approximately 15 to 20 feet down an embankment nearby.
Police say Bennet was wearing safety restraints at the time, while witnesses indicated that Merkley was not wearing a helmet. He was transported by air ambulance to Oregon Health Science University where he succumbed to his injuries as next of kin notification was made.
