The viewing party for the total solar eclipse has been canceled for financial reasons.

Molalla's eclipse event "Moonshadow Over Molalla" is off.

According to Mitch Magenheimer of the Molalla Rotary Club, lack of interest forced the cancelation. They sold only six camping spots and approximately a dozen entry bracelets.

"We were going to lose money on the deal," Magenheimer said.

The Rotary Club and the Molalla Area Chamber of Commerce were working together to organize the event, which was set to take place at Bohlander Field from Friday, Aug. 18 to Monday, Aug. 21.

Camping space and vendor spots were available with the hope of drawing out-of-town business to Molalla. But with only a few advance reservations made, Magenheimer didn't expect to be able to sell the needed reservations in the few days left before the eclipse. All reservations and vendor fees have been refunded.

"We appreciate everyone's effort, Magenheimer said. "But at the end of the day there just was no revenue to pay for itself."

While no event will take place there, Bohlander Field will be open for those who wish to view the eclipse from there.
